How to fix a corrupted mouse cursor in Windows 10

It can be a real pain when you try to do some work on your computer and the mouse pointer suddenly stops working.  The mouse pointer icon that normally appears on the desktop will be replaced with a “missing” or “corrupted” icon.  Not a good start to work on any computer!  In fact, “Corrupted” is a technical term used to mean that your mouse pointer no longer functions at all.  But don’t worry, we have some solutions here for you:

For the past week, I’ve been using a Windows 10 Insider Build 18267 to test a new feature called “Shelf”. I also spent some time playing some games on the latest version of Microsoft’s Xbox One game console. But I kept coming across one little problem that I was unable to fix. My mouse cursor was staying in one place. It wasn’t moving around the screen when I clicked on things. It didn’t even show a little white hand pointing at a particular spot. It was just there, frozen in one place.

Mouse cursors can be damaged by users using dual monitors with AMD laptops or desktops equipped with AMD graphics cards. This problem occurs mainly when using a single monitor.

However, if you encounter mouse pointer errors on a second monitor, you can use this guide to correct them as well.

Here are some solutions to fix damaged mouse pointer in Windows 10.

  1. Follow the instructions on the screen.

In some cases, the problem may be caused by an outdated driver. Follow these simple steps to manually update the mouse driver.

Another way to make updating drivers easier is to use a professional third-party program that automatically downloads and installs Windows drivers.

We recommend the use of special software to avoid the risk of PC malfunctions.

In most cases, the current drivers for your PC’s hardware and peripherals are not properly updated by the system. There are important differences between generic and vendor drivers. Finding the right driver version for each of your hardware components can be tedious. Therefore, an automatic wizard can help you find the right drivers and update your system every time, and we recommend DriverFix. Here’s how:

  1. Download and install DriverFix.
  2. Start the software.
  3. Wait until all defective drivers are detected.
  4. DriverFix will show you all drivers that have problems and you only need to select the one you want to fix.
  5. Wait until the application has downloaded and installed the latest drivers.
  6. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Make sure the drivers for the components of your PC are working properly without endangering your computer.

Some users have fixed damaged cursors by turning off the screen saver. This solution may not work for everyone, but it’s worth a try. You can turn off the screen saver in Windows 10 as follows.

4. disconnecting secondary display

When working with two monitors, the mouse pointers are usually damaged. Disabling the second VDU (Visual Display Unit) will probably solve the problem of the damaged cursor if you have a dual screen installed.

Run a system check for errors

Press Start Scan to check for Windows problems.

Press Repair Everything to troubleshoot proprietary technology.

Run a PC scan with Restoro Repair Tool to find errors that cause security problems and slowdowns. Once the scan is complete, the recovery process replaces the damaged files with new Windows files and components.

You can also disable the second screen function via the Windows display settings or via the project sidebar.

5. Quickly move the cursor between the two displays

Some users have also confirmed that moving the cursor quickly between two screen devices locks the cursor.

Therefore, move the cursor quickly back and forth between the two VDUs on both monitors to see if there is an effect. Moving the cursor to the right side of the taskbar may also solve the problem.

6. Select Duplicate from the project sidebar

This is another patch that several users have said fixed a damaged cursor. If your dual monitor is currently set to the expanded view mode, press Windows + P to open the sidebar shown below.

Select the display duplication mode setting mode here. Then select Expand again to return to expanded view mode.

7. Disable Windows Aero

Disabling the Aero effect in Windows 7 is another possible solution to the corrupted cursor problem. Aero-transparency can be turned off in Windows 7 by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Customize.

Then click on Window Color and uncheck Enable Transparency. You can also choose a new Windows 7 theme from the Basic and High Contrast Themes category.

Message: This last solution is only suitable for those who still have Windows 7 installed. This operating system is outdated and no longer receives updates, so we recommend upgrading to Windows 10 as soon as possible.
