According to Dave Weston, director of enterprise systems and operating system security at Microsoft, one of the main selling points of Windows 11 is its enhanced security. This is what he said:
Microsoft has a clear vision of how to protect our customers now and in the future, and we know that our approach works. We announce Windows 11 to raise the basic security level with new built-in hardware security requirements.
The intention is to completely do away with passwords in Windows 11 and switch to a zero-trust system.
While this is good news for Windows users, there are times when you need to password protect your files, especially if you share a computer with others.
The new operating system provides a tool to encrypt data, be it photos, videos, texts or entire folders. This article will show you how to use it and protect your files from prying eyes.
How can I password protect folders in Windows 11?
1. Use of property parameters
- Right-click the file you want to protect and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
- A window opens. Click the Advanced button.
- Select the Encrypt content to protect data check box, then click OK.
- After you click Apply, a pop-up window will appear asking if you want to save the file. Make your choice and the pop-up window will close.
- When you encrypt a folder, you are asked if you want to password protect all folders in that folder. When you have made your decision, press OK.
- Your folder is now protected by your account password, as seen by the small lock icon. Note that if you add new content to this folder, it will also be automatically encrypted.
Because the files are encrypted with your username and linked to your Windows account, they are only protected if someone logs into your device with a different account.
2. Using the folder lock
- Go to the official Folder Lock page and download it.
- After downloading, launch it and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
- Open the application and set the master password. Note that the master password for your Map Lock account cannot be restored if you forget or lose it.
- You can lock files, folders, and even the entire drive in the Lock Files section of the left sidebar. You can drag and drop folders or add them manually to lock them immediately.
Folder Lock keeps application-locked files hidden until you unlock them, and no one can access them no matter which Windows account they’re logged into on your computer.
Whether you want to hide your secret folders and files with encryption software or protect them with your operating system, a strong password is essential, here are some tips:
- The longer the better: Choose a password with at least ten characters. However, the length is only useful if it is not always the same number or an easily recognizable string.
- Combine upper and lower case letters, numbers and (if allowed) special characters. For example, don’t combine simple words or your pet’s name with your birth date.
- Use the first letters of a sentence – e.g. B. from a phrase you use often, or from a book you’ve read – and associate it with the current date. The advantage of this method is that you can easily combine letters and numbers into a story and remember the password for a long time.
It can be argued that using specialized software to protect your data is a much better choice. If you are interested in other tools to lock folders and files, see our article.
